Critiques Oct 2019

Open Show Sat 19th October 2019 Auction Market Lanark - Critiques
Judge:  Dominic Salt (Levelmoor)

Firstly, I would like to thank the wonderfully friendly and efficient committee, of this lovely breed club, for entrusting me with the chance to judge their prestigious open show. And for the lovely gifts I received afterwards.
I enjoyed my day immensely, and was very honoured to be judging such a numerically pleasing entry, and thank all of the exhibitors whom entered under me, and even more thanks to them when accepting my hopefully fair and honest decisions, of the dog on the day.
A few points I noted, were a number of level or worse bites, and the increasing number of heads becoming very domed, with round eyes very prominent in many cases, which is in no way correct. However, I did have many lovely exhibits, and was VERY pleased with my main winners.

Minor Puppy Dog (Entry 4,0 Abs)
1st Huyton’s HIGHTYNE WHEN I FALL IN LOVE Best Puppy Dog
A 7 ½ month old male of substance. A very pleasing amount of bone for one so young. A Good well moulded masculine head, flowing into a nice neck, and set of strong shoulders. More than adequate front assembly, and strong rear quarters. A level topline held well on an albeit slightly playful piece of movement, showing his willingness to please in the way his tail was ever wagging. A promising male puppy whom must have a promising future.
2nd Buckley’s STEELRIVER HIT THE BEACH WITH BUCKLEYHILL
Another male of pretty much the same age as the winner. Strongish front assembly, with pleasing angles. Good well ribbed body, with a level topline. An expressive young boy, with good eye shape and colour, and nice medium sized ears, whom although not very animated in tail action when standing, held it nicely on a steady piece of movement. Well turned out, and am sure will have an interesting career in the show ring.
3rd Kousourou’s STEELRIVER MAVRO BEACH OF ACKTIM
Reserve McShane’s STEELRIVER BEACH TIGER
Puppy Dog (Entry 2,0 Abs)
1st Buckley’s STEELRIVER HIT THE BEACH WITH BUCKLEYHILL
See second in Minor Puppy Dog.
2nd Grant’s WESTONCRUIVE BLACK TORNADO
A 10-month-old male of larger frame, albeit not of a bulky nature. A well boned youngster, but going through the gangly leggy stage at the moment. He has a nice head with a good eye. A lively youngster, whom made his handler earn her keep, both on the stand and whilst moving happily around the ring. Will tighten in time, and am sure will have promise when it all comes together.

Junior Dog (Entry 3,1 Abs)
1st Morris & Finlayson’s FINHAMSPRIDE KOVU
A striking male of just over 12months of age. He caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. A very showy young, strong well-muscled male, with very pleasing bone of quality. A solid masculine well moulded head, with very neat ears, sitting close to the side of his skull. He has a good strong well-proportioned structure, with good shoulder placement, level topline, good spring of rib, and pleasing tail set. He has correct angulations at both the front and rear, and was shown well. Turned out in very good hard condition, but whilst showing his furnishings off to good effect in his gleaming coat, both standing and during his very pleasing positive jolly movement. I am sure he will have a very successful future, and look forward to following his progress through the ranks.
2nd Blain’s RONEVORG I'M A BELIEVER IN STEELRIVER
A 13-month-old male with a nice head, with good eye shape and colour. Neat ears well set on the head. A Good neck flowing into nice shoulders. A pleasing front assembly. He has a nice spring of rib, and stands with a good topline and tailset. He was slightly weaker in rear assembly, which unfortunately showed more with his playful piece of movement.
Maiden Dog (Entry 2,1 Abs)
1st Grant’s WESTONCRUIVE BLACK TORNADO
See 2nd in Puppy Dog, but also have to mention that he moved a little steadier in this class, now settled.
Novice Dog (Entry 3,1 Abs)
1st Blain’s RONEVORG I'M A BELIEVER IN STEELRIVER Best Novice
See 2nd in Junior Dog.
2nd Blair’s PICK POCKET
A larger framed male of 21 months, with very good bone. A broad head, which could by no means be confused for a bitch. He has a nice front assembly, and stands on lovely nice tight feet. He had a good depth of chest, with a reasonable spring of rib. His rear angulations were not exaggerated, and he used his ever-wagging tail well on the move.
Undergraduate Dog (Entry 1,0 Abs)
1st Stewart’s CIARDUBHAN FIRE OPAL
An almost 3 ½ year old male with a nice head and eye. Very good bone in strength and shape. A well-furnished dog, with adequate front and rear assemblies. He held a very nice topline both standing and on his very positive piece of movement. Shown in nice condition, and enjoying his day out.
Graduate Dog (Entry 8,0 Abs)
1st Morris & Finlayson’s FINHAMSPRIDE KOVU
See 1st in Junior Dog
2nd Chipperfield & Higginbotham’s ISLSTROM ALL OF A STORM AT HOWLINGALE
A smaller framed 3 ½ year old male, but still with adequate bone. Pleasing front assembly, and more than happy with his rear angulations, both standing and on the move. A nice dog, with a good deep chest and holding his topline nicely, albeit not the most animated on the day.

VHC Stewart’s CIARDUBHAN FIRE OPAL
Post graduate Dog (Entry 7,0 Abs)
1st Laird’s BRANCHALWOOD STRATHEARN OF DAICHEIL (AI)
A well boned 5-year-old male of nice size. A nice eye in shape and colour, well set ears. Topline level, with good tailset. Rear angulations very pleasing, with an overall structure of above average quality, standing on the nicest of feet. A strong neck flowing into well placed shoulders, a good spring of rib. He has an ever-wagging tail both whilst standing and during his good piece of movement.
2nd Chipperfield & Higginbotham’s WISTASTON THE BLACK DIAMOND AT HOWLINGALE
A 4 ½ year old male with a masculine head shown in good condition. Front and rear assemblies were of a good standard. He holds his topline well, and has a strong ribcage of correct shape. He happily moved around the ring confirming my opinion of him being a nice dog.
3rd McConnell’s FELDKIRK FEARGHAL AT TORRWEAVING
Reserve Reekie’s ROTHERFIELD FIND A REASON
VHC Hewison’s CASBLAIDD ISLAND IN THE SKY
Limit Dog (Entry 6,1 Abs)
Most probably my best class of the day, with some lovely exhibits, whom made my decisions hard, but well worth the journey to be able to judge such nice specimens.
1st Jones’ ARMINZERAS INFOMANIA BY BENVELLYN (IMP NOR) Best Dog and Best In Show
A 6-year-old male, whom I have previously done well. Nice to see him maturing in the way I previously hoped he would. Now finished in all areas to a very high standard, which on the day was hard to fault in performance and ring presence. A good-sized male, with the most adorable head of quality in shape, sporting a fantastic expression. He has correct eyes in shape and colour, medium sized ears set well on the side of his head. Structurally, he has a strong well-muscled neck which flows well into a good lay of shoulders, level topline and solid well boned frame. His ribcage has lovely depth to allow good lung space, and his outline was enhanced by his wonderful feet.   His front assembly is better than average, but his rear angulations and strong rear movement delighted me immensely. His happy disposition made me smile, without detracting from his steady performance. He was turned out in good coat and condition, with furnishings where you would like them. Although having the tendency to carry his tail only slightly more gayly than some would desire, it does by no means lose an overall excellent outline which flows around the ring, but is equally fantastic whilst standing. A Joy to judge, and pleased to award the top honours.
2nd Stevenson’s PLAINFIRE'S THE CAPTAIN OF MY HEART IS STEELRIVER (IMP CHE) Res Best Dog and Res Best In Show
Another fantastic exhibit, whom I have seen from the side-lines, but never before had the pleasure to get my hands on. A 2 1/2-year-old male with a masculine well moulded head, sporting correct eye shape, with equally pleasing ears in size and set. Front angulations were as nice as his rear, which showed positively on the move. His outline was one of quality, in both topline, tailset, bone and all standing on strong well shaped feet. I feel that he still may have more improvement in him in the future, but found his overall quality was still very high, and he was always willing to please his handler, showing a joyous disposition, but without really putting a foot wrong. He was very unfortunate to come up against the winner, whom was on top form today. But I would not be surprised to see him pushing him even closer in the future. Pleased to place this nice dog very highly today.
3rd Buckley’s BUCKLEYHILL FINAVA LEGACY (AI)
Reserve McCormick’s STEELRIVER SUNS UP
VHC Harris’ HIGHLANDER Z MOKRE HORY AT SIANCALA (IMP CZE)
Open Dog (Entry 2,0 Abs)
1st Laird’s SEAHEART ARCHIBALD OF DAICHEIL
A 6-year-old medium sized male with a fantastic coat, and wonderful furnishings. A pleasing head with a good shape of eye. Adequate front assembly, with equally pleasing rear angulations. A well ribbed male, with plenty of depth of chest. He held his topline both standing and, on the move, and used his tail to compliment his movement, without being over the top. A nice specimen, but could not live with the main winners in the challenge.
2nd Blain’s SH CH CACI'S JUST A GIGOLO AT STEELRIVER (IMP SWE) JW
A 5-year-old male with a slightly less balanced immature structure, albeit having some lovely characteristics. He had a nice head, with a good eye, ears well set on head, and a friendly expression. He moved soundly around the ring, showing off his angulations in doing so, but was giving his handler a hard time when dancing on the spot, but bringing a smile to the watching gallery.
Veteran Dog (Entry 6,1 Abs)
Another nice class, of mature boys whom are a credit to their owners. Always nice to judge the gentlemen of the breed.
1st Blain’s SH CH ROTHERFIELD FIRST REQUEST Best Veteran
A dog whom defied his veteran status, without detracting from his performance. He has very nice strong bone, a lovely well moulded head, and good shoulder placement. His assemblies at the front and rear were pleasing enough, and his well-muscled neck enhancing his overall nice outline. He was turned out in good coat and condition, and moved by far the best in this class. Did come into consideration for the top honours, but on this day had to settle on being chosen as the best Veteran in show, which I was still pleased to award him.
2nd Reekie’s ROTHERFIELD CHAOS OF A STAR
An altogether larger male of 7 years. He has many good attributes, including nice eye shape, good front angulations, nice deep chest, and showed he was happy to be in the show ring. He moved nicely around the ring, but was never going to beat the winner on this day, but showed enough to beat some other nice exhibits.

Minor Puppy Bitch (Entry 3,0 Abs)
1st Rattray’s ROTHERFIELD ANOTHER TIME Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy
A 10-month bitch whom impressed me, from the moment she entered the ring. She has good bone for her age, and stands on lovely tight feet. Although having slightly larger ears than the desired, she does not lose any of her elegance because of it, and in time will hopefully grow into them nicely. She has a sweet soft expression, that cannot be ignored. She has a strong front assembly, and equally strong rear quarters for one so young. She has a strong structure, including nice strong neck flowing into good shoulder placement, level topline, and correct tailset. She has a good spring of rib, and is well muscled. She excels in rear movement, and headed a strong class of bitch puppies, and I was pleased to award her Best puppy, even though she was beginning to tire later in the day.
2nd Huyton’s HIGHTYNE RAMBLIN ROSE
Another pleasing puppy bitch, whom should also have a bright future. She was only 7 ½ months old, but showed well for such a baby. She has a very pretty feminine head, good eye in shape and colour, and lovely earset. She has an overall structure to be happy with, but will benefit when strengthening up with time, as occasionally losing her topline only slightly. But you could not fail to be impressed by the way that she conducted herself both standing, and on the move. Nice Puppy, whom was unfortunate to meet the winner on such good form.
3rd Stevenson’s STEELRIVER VENICE BEACH
Puppy Bitch (Entry 2,1 Abs)
1st Grant’s WESTONCRUIVE BLACK AURORA
A 10 months old bitch, whom along with handler was being shown for the first time. Both dog and handler acquitted themselves well. A steady mover. She has a nice enough head, has reasonable bone, good feet, nice tailset with an ever-wagging action. She was turned out in nice coat, and had fun on her debut. A promising start for both handler and bitch.
Junior Bitch (Entry 7,3 Abs)
1st Morris & Finlayson’s FINHAMSPRIDE SARAFINA
A very nice bitch, whom I liked very much in both looks and attitude. She danced her way through the class showing willingness to please, whilst enjoying her day out. A very pretty bitch of just over 12 months of age. She has a very nice head in size and shape, good eye in shape and colour, lovely ears well set on side of her head. Good open nostrils. Strong Neck and topline, with a nice lay of shoulders. She has a lovely front assembly with nice angles, and is equally good in rear. She was turned out in good condition, and handled very well, which showed on the move with her happy but solid movement. Considered her for higher honours, as she was very pleasing all round, and I believe her to have a very promising future.
2nd Thomson’s CACI'S THE DREAM CATCHER AT BADCALL
A 14-month-old bitch with a pretty head. She stands very well on a good overall structure with front and rear angulation more than adequate. She has a good level topline, and a decent tailset, however was inclined not to use her tail to her advantage, losing points on animation. She did however move well, and was turned out in good condition.

2nd Armstrong’s CANDIDACASA STRAWBERRY
A 15-month-old solid Liver bitch. A very novicey girl, whom needs to lose a little puppy fat now. She has good angulation at the front, but only average rear assembly. She has reasonable bone, and overall outline quite nice, with a good tailset. She used her tail well, on the steady bit of movement. Will no doubt improve with age, and be an interesting project for her handler. Nice to see a liver bitch out today.
3rd Verrecchia’s ROTHERFIELD IT'S ALL ABOUT ME VIA INCANTO
Reserve Stewart’s CIARDUBHAN MYSTIC TOPAZ
Novice Bitch (Entry 4,1 Abs)
1st Hedges’ SATINBAZE CIRQUE DU LUMIERE (AI)
A 20-month-old bitch of substantial structure, whom was turned out in good coat and condition. She has a nicely moulded head, with a good eye in shape and colour, and sporting a lovely expression. Her rear angulations were more pleasing than her front, however both were adequate. She has a good spring of rib, and a nice deep chest. A good neck of strength, flowing into her topline. She moved positively around the ring without being flashy.
2nd Verrecchia’s ROTHERFIELD IT'S ALL ABOUT ME VIA INCANTO
A 19-month-old bitch, with a relatively pretty head. She is a fair bit smaller in size, but still has a nice outline when standing, but was a little lean for my liking. She has a wonderful rear action when moving. She has a good neck and a level topline, which she held on the move. Steady.
3rd Stewart’s CIARDUBHAN MYSTIC TOPAZ
Undergraduate Bitch (Entry 2,0 Abs)
1st Thorpe’s MONTREATHMNT HOTLIPS
A 19-month-old bitch with a very nice front assembly of pleasing angulation. She has a nice strong well-muscled neck flowing not a level topline, and enhancing her shoulder placement. She comes with a nice spring of rib, and although a little long in loin, did not appear out of proportion. Was testing her handler when attempting to stand, but when moving performed with plenty of efficiency. She had a tendency to use her tail only sometimes, but when doing so improved the picture.
2nd Irvine’s WISTASTON KENTUCKIAN LADY AT VBOS (AI)
A 2-year-old bitch whom appears to need more time to mature. She does have a nice head and expression, good eye, and has a good neckline. When standing beautifully, she has a nice enough body, and was turned out in good condition. However she was quite loose on the move, despite a good use of her ever wagging tail.
Graduate Bitch (Entry 3,1 Abs)

2nd Rattray’s ROTHERFIELD ABOUT TIME
A 19-month-old bitch whom was a little unsettled, but did show glimpses of steadiness. A happy girl with a nice head, good eye shape and colour, with medium sized ears well set on side of head. She has nice angulations at the rear, and moved ok. A little wavy in coat, but otherwise not too bad.
Postgraduate Bitch (Entry 6,2 Abs)
1st Gale’s WILLOWSWIND NETTE LARK JW Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex
A 3 ½ year old bitch whom I have admired from the side-lines, but now had the chance to see if everything I could see, felt as correct in reality. A was not disappointed. This bitch was very nicely put together indeed, with fantastic front and rear assemblies. She was of good size, but with nice bone. A shortish but strong neck flowing into a good level topline, including good tailset and carriage. Reasonable feet, which helped her footfall whilst positively moving around the ring. She has a pretty, and pleasing, moulded head, with a good dark eye of correct shape. Nice medium sized ears set closely to the skull. An entirely pleasing expression, with good use of ears. She used her happy wagging tail to good effect both standing and on the move. A joy to go over, and an absolute credit to both owner and handler. Pleased to award Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex, and just unfortunate to be challenged by two outstanding Males for the very top honour.
2nd Cowan’s DRAKETOR DARTMOOR BEAUTY WITH ANDWALLS
A 3-year-old bitch with a nice head, with a good shaped eye. Stands nicely, all four square. Her rear construction was very nice, showing lovely angles from side and back. She holds her topline and tail nicely both standing and, on the move, which was a steady piece of movement, aided amply by her joyful wagging tail. Handled well.
3rd Ball‘s GWENADILLO PURE GENIUS AT CHAMPUNZIE
Reserve Stewart’s ESKSIDE LADY OF LOGANLEA

Limit Bitch (Entry 5,1 Abs)
1st Flynn’s SIMON SAYS HOME TO THE CASTLE (IMP NOR) Res Best Bitch
2 ½ year old flashy bitch with an elegant head, nice eye and good earset. Her front assembly was very pleasing to the eye, and felt just as good. She has a lovely deep chest with plenty of lung room. Nice loin, good level topline, and nice set of the tail. She had a tendency to be a little too exuberant at times, but when settled showed off her outstanding outline to perfection. Her rear angulations were also very strong, and this showed when driving away from me. She still has a little bit of maturing to do, but am sure can only improve further with development. Am sure she will push for top honours when even more settled and will watch her progress with interest. Turned out in good condition, and handled well.
2nd Thomson’s BADCALL PETRONELLA
A 4-year-old bitch whom was not as elegant in head as 1st, but was altogether quite a nice bitch. She has a good front, and a strong neckline, nice lay of shoulders, good tailset. Her rear angulations were quite strong too, and although taking time to settle, eventually moved quite steadily, with an ever-wagging tail.
3rd Stevenson’s STEELRIVER SUN KISSED JW
Reserve Thorpe’s  CANDIDACASA PORSCHE AT MONTREATHMN
Open Bitch (Entry 5,4 Abs)
1st Flynn’s BALLYRIVER SADLY SOBER WITH RODSDREAM
Unfortunately standing alone, in what could have been a very nice class indeed. At 3 ½ she was pretty mature, having a pleasing head, with very neat ears, nice dark eye, of correct shape. She has a very sound front construction, and equally assured rear assembly, which she showed off well on the move. She has a very nice level topline, and a good tailset. A happy and willing character, whom deserved her placing, but could not quite compete for top honours against some fantastic bitches.
Veteran Bitch (Entry 5,2 Abs)
Some nice veterans in this class, and good to see them looking so sound and well.
1st Gale’s WILLOWSWIND MAIAS WISH
A 7-year-old bitch whom is nicely put together all through. She has a nice head, with correct eye, and good ears. Her neck flows nicely into her good lay of shoulder, and her topline remains good whilst standing, but also when on the move. Being critical, I would have preferred nicer feet, but as a picture did not get spoilt by this attribute. She moves steadily, and always showed her happy disposition. Handled well, and a pleasure to judge.
2nd Stevenson’s BLACKTOFT MISTY BLUE STEELRIVER
A 7 ½ year old bitch of nice size. She was very pretty in head and expression. Front and rear angulations were pleasing enough, and she moved pretty well indeed. Looking petite on the move, but nevertheless, still a satisfying picture. A nice happy dog, whom moved with ease for her handler.
3rd Reid’s ORKHATOS ELEKTR
Brace (Entry 3, 0 Abs)
A very enjoyable experience to judge this class. I was a little disappointed in how well all 3 pairs performed, as I hoped for a little comedy, as my own efforts in this class have mostly created comedic moments, for the watching gallery. But all 3 Brace’s handled very well indeed, and it was a very close decision for all 3 placings.
1st Huyton’s
A beautifully matched pair of young puppies. Brother and Sister whom stood very well, and moved around the ring effortlessly. Apparently their first attempt at this, but they acted like professionals, as did their handler. A joy to watch, and enjoyable to judge.
2nd Gale’s
Another well matched pair, but this time both bitches. They also moved very well and stood professionally. Another well balanced pair of beautiful girls, whom again were a credit to their handler.
3rd Ross’
A pair of males whom also did not put a foot wrong, and showed their previous experiences in this class to be very beneficial. A third pair, whom also showed at one with their handler.
