Special Award Classes
Judge: Mrs Caroline Thomson (Badcall)

Thank you to the committee of the Flatcoated Retriever Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge the Special Awards classes at their Open Show on 16th October 2021. I was absolutely delighted with my entry and with the overall quality of the dogs entered under me.  It was a pleasure to go over each and every dog/bitch and my sincere thanks go to all those competitors who allowed me the privilege of doing so.

Special Puppy Award Dog or Bitch (4, 2)
1st.  Finhamspride Puma – Holmes, Ms E M C
Nice young boy with a good head, dark almond eye and a scissor bite. Good reach of neck and a strong topline. Good front and layback of shoulder but depth of brisket is still to come. Movement was okay and appropriate to his age and stage of development.
2nd   Pajanbeck get Rhythm to Qlocontrail (AI) – Ross, Mr J M & Mrs K N
A happy, enthu
siastic puppy with an ever wagging tail.  A masculine head with well set on ears and a scissor bite. He has plenty of bone and nice feet. Movement however not as good as the class winner but would also be appropriate to his age/development. Beautifully handled by his owner.

Special Post Graduate Award Dog or Bitch (14,5)
1st  Satinblaze Cracksman for Blacktoft JW (AI) - Fox, Mrs H M
A very balanced dog with a good masculine head, dark almond eyes and a scissor bite. Good topline which he held when moving.  He is perhaps a little bigger than I would have liked however he is in proportion.  Excellent sternum, point of and layback of shoulder and good depth of brisket.  Short coupled. Moved strongly.  His rear movement was a little close but not overly and this might have been due to the floor. Feet okay.
2nd  Rotherfield Another time - Rattray, Miss A
A lovely, understated bitch with a pretty feminine one piece head, flat skull, with dark almond eye, well set on ears and a good bite.  She has a good reach of neck into a strong chest with good layback of shoulder, excellent depth of brisket and a good topline which she held on the move. She had good free movement both front and back. Could only be improved by a bit more coat.
3rd   Westoncruive Black Tornado - Grant, Mrs J

Special Award Open Dog or Bitch (8,2)
1st  Steelriver Dance in the Sun at Skyloch - McDonald, Mr I A & Mrs A L
A lovely, mature bitch with a good head, dark eyes, well set on ears and a good reach of neck. She is height appropriate for the breed, has a super sternum, layback of shoulder and depth of brisket. A great topline which flows into a well placed tail all of which was held beautifully on the move. She had excellent front and rear movement.   The cherry on the cake for me is her lovely coat.
2nd  Blacktoft Dancing the Blues - Fox, Mrs H M
This young bitch was a pleasure to go over. She has the most beautiful feminine head, flat skull, dark almond eyes, well placed ears and a good bite. All the above that applies to the class winner applies equally to this young bitch who just has a little more maturing to do.
3rd   Steelriver Suns Up - McCormick, Mr S
